Kakaako, Oahu’s “Third City”?

Indoor Go CartsAs if Kakaako doesn’t have a lot going on already, a developer hopes to build a $10 million amusement facility in Kakaako that would include go-kart racing, a surfing wave pool and skateboard park.

The project led by Billy Balding is slated for a 3-acre parcel leased from Kamehameha Schools near Kakaako Makai Gateway Park fronting Ala Moana.

With 22 new highrise condominium buildings slated for Kakaako, it’s appears this neighborhood is well on it’s way to becoming Oahu’s “Third City.”  I’m just wondering how they plan to feed all these people as the lack of supermarkets in this area is a big drawback.  Kakaako real estate is some of the most expensive on the island, so there is a distinct possibility many of the owners will be mainland residents or foreign nationals.   It’s rumored that Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg has purchased units at the yet-to-be-built One Ala Moana on the corner where the old Honolulu Advertiser building sits at Ala Moana & South Street.
