Waikiki

Waikiki, Hawaii is a beautiful beachfront neighborhood in Honolulu. Waikiki Beach is best known feature of the neighborhood and has beautiful white sand beaches. The spans from Diamond Head to the east and all the way to the Ala Wai Canal to the north and west. The neighborhood is home to a large variety of high-rise buildings, condominiums and resorts creating a picturesque skyline. Half of the beach area is reserved for surfers and the area is known for its long rolling break waves well-suited tandem surfing, long boarding, and surfers of all experience levels.

The name Waikiki means spouting fresh water in the native tongue of the island and refers to the springs and the streams they fed that in its early history separated the area from the islands interior. The area was once, up into the 1800s, a vacation or retreat area for the islands royal family. By the end of the 1800s small hotels began to open along the beach and from there it has grown into a popular tourist destination. The beach is also home to many out rigger canoe races, surf competitions, and hula competitions. Waikiki’s sister city within the continental United States is Bixby Oklahoma.
