Kailua, in Honolulu County, Hawaii is a census designated place or CDP that lies in the Ko’olaupoko District of Oahu. Located along Kailua Bay and lying just 12 miles northeast of Honolulu, Kailua is primarily a residential area. The CDP spans 10.6 square miles, of which 2.8 square miles is water covered. Much of the wetlands is made up of the Kawaii Nui Marsh. Other places of interest are the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Lanikai Beach adn Kailua Beach Park.

The natives of Hawaii have a long history on their islands perhaps as much as 1,500 years of history. One of the first Europeans in the area was Captain James Cook. King Kamehameha I conquered O’ahu in 1795 during his quest to unite the islands. Kailua remained small up through the 1940s having only about 3,000 residents. But with World War II the expansion of the Naval Air Station at Kaneohe Bay, which is now the Marine Corps Base Hawaii and the Army’s Fort Hase impacted the development of the area. During the 1950s Hawaii became a state and by the 1960s the population had skyrocketed to 24,400.

The CDP of Kuilua has much to offer from the beautiful bay and beach areas to thriving night spots, historic sites, hiking trails and quaint eateries and five star restaurants. Historic locations like Kawai’nui Marsh, which is sacred to Hawaiins, is the largest wetlands among the islands the marsh also contains an ancient walled taro water garden and other cultural and archaeological resources and The Hilltop House built by Arthur and Anne Powlison in the 1920s the construction is unique in that none of the native rocks were removed or destroyed during construction, the house was also used as a training center and vantage point by the military during World War II. Unique and delectable dishes can be found at establishments including Cinnamon’s Restaurant, Pinky’s Bar and Grill, A Cup of Tea and many others. Hiking is a favorite way to take in the natural beauty of the island at locations such as Maunawili Falls, Mount Olomana and the Ka’iwa Ridge Trail.

According to the 2000 United States Census the CDP had 36,513 residents spread across 12,229 households giving it a population density of 3,444.62 persons per square mile. In both 2008 and 2009 President Barack Obama and his family took winter vacations in Kailua.
