Kailua Life
Stunning, heaven, paradise are just a few of the superlatives used to describe the natural surroundings in Kailua, Oahu located about 12 miles north east of Honolulu. From makua (the mountains) to makai (the ocean), the topography in Kailua is as diverse as the melting pot of cultures that have lived here for over a century. What used to be primarily a commuter neighborhood for those working “in (Honolulu) town”, Kailua has been transformed into a bustling, little community with two of the most picturesque beaches in all of Hawaii. World famous Lanikai (heavenly sea), home to Lanikai Beach, is a quaint neighborhood of about 650 homes (Lanikai Listings), and is home to 2 iconic off-shore islands commonly referred to as “The Mokes”. Much of life in Kailua is centered around water sport activities, so take your pick from outrigger canoe paddling (Kailua Canoe Club & Lanikai Canoe Club, surfing, stand up-paddling, swimming with Aulea Swim Club, snorkeling, diving, kayaking or just hanging out and enjoying the epic views. If water sports aren’t your thing, no worries, there’s always golf & tennis Mid Pacific County Club), more tennis at Kailua Racquet Club & boating and swimming at Kaneohe Yacht Club. Heading inland towards the mountains, hikes of all levels are available including Olomana Trail (experienced hikers only please!), Maunawili Falls (WARNING can be really MUDDY), & Kawainui Marsh Dike Trail (easy peasy on a paved road). FUN FACT: Kawainui Marsh is the largest remaining wetlands in the state of Hawaii! Picturesque & famous Kailua Beach is a long, sandy, crescent shaped, beach with a mostly sandy bottom along the 2.8 mile stretch. If you want to take a long walk on the beach, this is the 2nd longest beach on Oahu. Kailua neighbor, Waimanalo Beach is the longest, and well worth a visit too! Going back to golf, we previously mentioned Kailua is home to Mid Pacific Country Club but wanted to also mention Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, in close proximity are Olomana Golf Club in Waimanalo, Koolau Golf Club, the Pali Golf Course, and the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Kaneohe, and lastly Hawaii Kai Golf Course in Hawaii Kai! FORE!
Aside from the awesome natural resources available to enjoy in Kailua, there are loads of LOCALLY OWNED shops & boutiques including Kailua General Store, Island Treasures & Island Paddler, markets/delis like Kalapawai Market & Cafe, tasty restaurants like Buzz’s Steakhouse, Baci Bistro & Assagios, refreshing brew pubs including Three Peaks, Grace & Growlers, Lanikai Brewing Company, healthy smoothie shops like Lanikai Juice, coffee shops including Morning Brew & Chad Lous. Kailua likely has more supermarkets per capita than all of Oahu! Kailua is home to Down to Earth Health Food, Safeway (3 locations), Times Supermarket, Foodland, Whole Foods Market & Target. You can pretty much get whatever you need in Kailua, so no need to drive to town (Honolulu) unless you want some serious nightlife! When is comes to night life in Kailua, things wrap up on the earlier side. If you are wanting to go out for a late night beverage & fun, recommend Creekside Bar on Hamakua, Bob’s Sport Bar just down from Creekside, Boardriders also on Hamakua, and Kailua Pub!
