Kaneohe

Kaneohe is a census-designated place within the city and county of Honolulu, Hawai’i. It is also a part of the state District Ko’olaupoko on the island of O’ahu. The CDP spans a total area of 8.5 square miles, of which 1.9 square miles of which is covered in water. The CDP lies along Kane’ohe Bay and is the largest of the bay side communities. The commercial center of this bustling area lies along the well-known Kamehamea Highway.

The area began as an agricultural center, but today the largest commercial crop is bananas. Golf is a popular sport in the area and the CDP is home to three golf courses, the Pali Golf course, which is private, and the Kao’olau Golf Club and the Bayview Golf club, which are privately owned, but open to the public. Sailing is another popular past-time for locals and the Kaneohe Yacht Club offers the best in amenities and opportunities. Members of the club enjoy the adult and children’s pools, picnic tables, tennis courts and more. The club provides both wet mooring and dry docking for member’s boats and the KYC bar and dining room lets members gather for meals, drinks and other club functions.

Local attractions also include the Ho’omaluhia Botannical Garden, the Marine Corps Base Hawaii and the Hawai’i National Veterans Cemetery. The bay area is also home to other beautiful sites both natural and man-made. For example, those seeking natural beauty enjoy locations like He’eia State Park. The park offers gorgeous views of the bay, the nearby Koolua Mountains, and the He’eia Fishpond, which is both natural and historic having once been used to raise mullet for local royalty.

Those seeking more man-made endeavors will enjoy the BYODO-IN TEMPLE. This attraction is a gorgeous replica of a 900 year old Buddist temple, like those found in Japan. The temple is set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Koolua Mountains and encourages visitors to breathe deep and find some much needed inner peace. Other local spots like the beaches and parks offer countless opportunities to swim, hike, bike and more.

The population of Kaneohe, according to the 2000 United States Census was 34,970 giving the CDP a population density of 5,320.7 people per square mile. Real estate options in the area range from homes for sale, to apartments for rent and luxury living spaces such as town houses and condominiums to lease. Homes for sale begin with smaller starter homes and range the spectrum through middle-class suburban homes and continue up through luxury homes and beachfront properties.
